Sharon Taylor-Ellis brings more than 30 years of experience in supply chain management and logistics to her role as Campus President at  Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI) Universal Technical Institute (UTI) in Orlando, Florida.

Taylor-Ellis spent 16 years at Nordstrom in leadership roles including Regional Operations Director, Distribution Center General Manager and Retail Store Manager, managing teams of up to 400 employees.

She worked for Nike for nearly 6 years, in roles in Global Sourcing & Manufacturing and Global Transportation Strategy. Her decades of experience leading both strategy and daily operations have made her an asset to the UTI team.

Taylor-Ellis became UTI/MMI Orlando’s Campus President in 2019. A passionate believer in education and helping all students find the best educational path, Taylor-Ellis has relished her purpose-filled role.

UTI/MMI Orlando is one of the largest campuses in the UTI network from a physical standpoint, with 5 buildings powered by around 150+ staff members. Taylor-Ellis says her goal at UTI/MMI Orlando is to create a technical school environment that is engaging, safe and educationally sound and that graduates technicians to meet the increasing demand in the Automotive, Diesel, Motorcycle, Powersports and Marine industries.

Trade School Education Philosophy

Taylor-Ellis states her full support for trade schools, as she says a traditional university environment is not always ideal for all types of students. Taylor-Ellis says pursuing a career in trades like automotive, diesel, marine, motorcycle and powersports, welding or electrical areas, which include subjects students can study at UTI/MMI Orlando and other UTI campuses, can provide a long-lasting career for years to come.

Taylor-Ellis mentions the strong industry partnerships that UTI has also benefit students. Taylor-Ellis says she is supportive of the longstanding UTI/MMI industry relationships with OEMs and suppliers, which leads to UTI Orlando students having access to the equipment and the hands-on experience they need to thrive in the industry after graduation.

The Future of UTI Orlando

Since Taylor-Ellis became Campus President, UTI/MMI Orlando has seen positive year-over-year student outcomes of retention and graduation. Taylor-Ellis empowers her team to identify students early on who would benefit from additional guidance and support, so that students are set up for success in school. >

At UTI/MMI Orlando, Taylor-Ellis continues to cultivate a cohesive program strengthened by employer partnerships. Throughout the year, the Orlando campus partners with industry employers to provide local employment and career opportunities for students.

Ongoing interaction and collaboration between the UTI/MMI staff, industry employers and students include industry-specific career fairs, quarterly student recognition lunches hosted by key employers for students achieving high academic and attendance standards, and on-campus employer presentations and interviews.

Taylor-Ellis says she was drawn to working at UTI/MMI Orlando because of the school’s excellent reputation in the industry and its ability to change lives and truly impact the staff and students who attend it. As a leader, Taylor-Ellis embraces a coach and mentor role and strives to lead by example. She characterizes herself as very driven, setting high expectations for herself and others. She balances an empathetic, caring attitude with a transparent, logical and analytical work ethic.

Outside of UTI Orlando

Taylor-Ellis was born in Portsmouth, Virginia. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Asian Studies from Wake Forest University in North Carolina. During college, she studied abroad in Shanghai, China, and Taipei, Taiwan.

Taylor-Ellis is married and has a son, Jack, and daughter, Francesca, as well as two dogs and a cat. She and her family relocated to a small town outside the Orlando area and are enjoying their new life in sunny Florida.
